Galaxy defender Jazic undergoes ankle surgery

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Ante Jazic, a 31-year-old defender for the Los Angeles Galaxy, could miss up to three months of the upcoming Major League Soccer season after undergoing right ankle surgery, the club announced Thursday.

The teammate of England superstar David Beckham is not expected back until May at the earliest and July at the outside following an operation that removed and repaired cartilage. The Major League Soccer season will open in late March.

Jazic played 16 games last year before injuring his ankle in a 4-3 victory at New York on August 18. The Canadian international has appeared 29 times for the Galaxy since arriving from Russia's Kuban Krasnodar in August of 2006.

The Galaxy also announced that goalkeeper Joe Cannon and defender Troy Roberts have undergone hernia surgery. Each is expected to be ready for action when pre-season workouts begin next month.
