WARSAW (AFP) — Over thirty Jews saved from the Holocaust by German industrialist Oscar Schindler will reunite in Krakow this weekend to mark the destruction of this city's ghetto, the municipality said Monday.
Jews mainly from the United States, Israel and Great Britain will walk through the streets of Krakow on March 16 in the direction of the former Krakow-Plaszow concentration camp where -- 65 years ago -- Jewish people were sent following Nazi destruction of the ghetto.
Polish people decorated by Israel for having saved Jews during World War II will also be participating in the march.
Schindler (1908-1974) founded a saucepan factory in 1940 in Krakow and until 1944 had hundreds of Jews working for him who were in turn able to escape Nazi death camps.
Shortly before the war ended, Schindler's factory was evacuated and his employees saved by the arrival of the allies. In total, more than 1,000 Jews were saved from the Holocaust by Schindler.
In 1993, his story was made famous in the Steven Spielberg film "Schindler's List" starring Liam Neeson, which subsequently won seven Oscars.
