Bob Geldof says bigger than Condi Rice

TOKYO (AFP) — John Lennon once said that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus, but rocker-turned-activist Bob Geldof has a somewhat more modest target -- he says he's more powerful than Condoleezza Rice.

Geldof, who founded Live Aid and later concerts aimed at fighting global poverty, was in Tokyo to press for action in Africa ahead of a summit of the Group of Eight major industrial nations in Japan in July.

Some two dozen journalists showed up for his meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura, who quipped he was unsure if so much media would turn up for his meeting Wednesday with Rice, the US secretary of state.

"Obviously, I am more beautiful and glamorous than her ... and five times more powerful," Geldof responded with a grin.

Geldof, sporting a double-breasted suit along with black boots and shoulder-length grey hair, also said US President George W. Bush was keen to make helping Africa his legacy as he finishes his time in office.
