Man on terror charges over homemade bombs

LONDON (AFP) — A man appeared in court Friday charged with terrorism offences after he was found to be carrying two homemade explosive devices and Nazi literature at a train station.

Neil Lewington, 43, from Reading, has been charged with 10 offences under anti-terror legislation and another related to explosives laws.

He was stopped at Lowestoft station in Suffolk on October 30, after allegedly being abusive to a member of staff.

Lewington was found to be carrying two improvised explosive devices, seven timers, four containers of weed killer and firelighters.

He is also accused in connection with possession of a book entitled "Counter Bomb", and a handbook for the Waffen SS, the combat arm of Adolf Hitler's paramilitary forces.

He has been charged with preparing to commit acts of terrorism and possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life.

Lewington spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared before the City of Westminster magistrates' court in London.

He was remanded to appear at a higher court for a preliminary hearing on November 28.
