Tergat eyes New York marathon

NAIROBI (AFP) — Kenyan track star, former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat, has set his eyes on the New York marathon scheduled for November.

Tergat, whose world mark of 2:04.55 in Berlin in 2003 was bettered by his Ethiopian arch-rival Haile Gebreselassie last year, has not competed since finishing sixth in 2007 London marathon.

"I am feeling good because I have completed all my local and international assignments and I am now focusing on serious training and competition," he said.

"I do have a number of races lined up but the climax will be New York in November," added the 39-year-old track star on Wednesday.

After finishing sixth in London last year, Tergat was forced to skip last year's Fukuoka marathon due to official commitments and the same saw him withdraw from this year's London marathon.

The November event will be his third show at New York marathon having won on his debut in 2005. He finished third the following year.

Tergat, a five time World Cross Country champion and former Olympic 10,000m silver medallist, has ruled himself out of the Beijing Olympics, saying there were many young runners who deserved to be selected.
