SEOUL (AFP) — South Korean police said Wednesday they have arrested a 31-year-old teacher of English who has been sought by US authorities for the past nine years as a murder suspect.
The US citizen of Korean descent, identified only as Nam, was being hunted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police for a 1996 robbery and murder in Pennsylvania.
"We've been looking for him for the past nine years. We found him working at a language institute in Gwangju, teaching English to children," a police spokesman told AFP. Gwangju is in the southern suburbs of Seoul.
Nam and three accomplices allegedly broke into the home of a former police officer in Pennsylvania, shot him dead and stole his handgun in August 1996.
After being released on bail, he fled to South Korea in March 1997.
He was briefly arrested here in August 1999 but had to be freed because of the lack of a bilateral extradition treaty.
His case prompted the two allies to sign the agreement in December 1999 and South Korean police launched a manhunt for him.
