Rock rebel Doherty penning a musical
LONDON (AFP) — Rock star Pete Doherty, a former boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss who is as notorious for his drug-taking as his songs, is co-writing a musical, a London theatre confirmed Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for the trendy Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden said Doherty was collaborating with his bandmate from the now defunct group the Libertines, Carl Barat, on the musical.
"It is something very much in the early stages of development with no deadlines attached," the spokeswoman said.
"We at the Donmar are excited to be engaging with such brilliant talent and we'll make an announcement as appropriate in due course."
Since leaving the Libertines in 2004, Doherty has recorded two albums with his Babyshambles group, while Barat now fronts the band Dirty Pretty Things.
Barat told a newspaper: "A producer from the theatre approached me through my record label.
"So I went down there to see a play and we met up for a chat. He asked me if I was still in contact with Pete and whether we would be interested in writing a musical together for the Donmar for the early part of 2009.
"I asked Pete and he loves the idea. He has invited me to Wiltshire this week to start writing it."
Things are looking up for 28-year-old Doherty -- last week, readers of NME music magazine voted him Hero of the Year, 12 months after he was voted Villain of the Year.
