Spy farce 'Get Smart' tops US, Canada box office

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — "Get Smart," a remake of a 1960s television series about the misadventures of a bumbling US secret agent, topped North American box office sales this weekend, final figures showed Monday.

The Cold War-era farce, starring comic Steve Carell as Agent Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway as his female sidekick Agent 99, earned 38.7 million dollars, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"The Incredible Hulk", starring Edward Norton as the Marvel Comics superhero who you wouldn't like when he's angry, was second with 22.1 million dollars.

In third place was "Kung Fu Panda," the animated adventures of a kindly panda forced to become a martial-arts master to save his jungle from leopard villains. The film had a weekend take of 21.9 million dollars.

"The Love Guru," a gag-laden comedy starring Mike Myers as a bearded self-help Indian swami, claimed fourth place with 13.9 million dollars.

Fifth place went to "The Happening," the latest offering from acclaimed mystery-horror director M. Night Shyamalan, which grossed 10.5 million dollars.

Next were "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," with 8.5 million dollars for sixth place; The Adam Sandler comedy "You Don't Mess with the Zohan," which earned 7.4 million for seventh; and the big-screen version of television hit "Sex and the City," with weekend takings of 6.5 million dollars, for eighth place.

Rounding out the top ten were "Iron Man," which earned four million dollars, and fright flick "The Strangers," with 2.1 million dollars in ticket sales.
