JAKARTA (AFP) — The international airport in the Indonesian resort island of Bali, which will host a major global summit later this year, has met all international aviation security standards, the US embassy here said Thursday.
"This is very good news for Indonesia as it prepares to host the United Nations COP-13 Climate Change Conference in Bali this December," US embassy Charge d'affairs, John Heffern, said in an embassy statement.
The embassy said Ngurah Rai international airport met International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and applauded authorities for improving security procedures.
The December meeting has the task of setting down a roadmap for negotiations that hopefully will conclude at the end of 2009 with a deal to accelerate and deepen cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases.
US law requires the department of homeland security conduct security assessments at foreign airports with direct service to the United States.
Doubts about the safety and security of air travel in Indonesia, including ground facilities, have been raised after a number of accidents this year.
