WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush will hold a press conference at 10:20 am (1420 GMT) Tuesday and make an opening statement on steps he has taken to boost the battered US economy, the White House said.
"He will talk about the overall state of the economy," as well as specific steps he has taken to ease election-year economic woes, spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.
"The president will talk about steps his administration has taken to stabilize the housing and financial markets," she said, amid fears linked to a crisis of confidence in the US banking sector
Bush was also to note "his recent action to lift the executive prohibition on offshore oil exploration, and the need for Congress to also remove the ban on offshore exploration on the outer continental shelf," said Perino.
He was also to prod the US Congress, controlled by his Democratic foes, to approve annual budget measures and "note that they are running out of time," said the spokeswoman.
Bush's press conference came as the presumptive Democratic presidential hopeful, Senator Barack Obama, was to make what his campaign billed as a major policy address on the war in Iraq at 10:45 am (1445 GMT).
