Mexican navy finds suspected drugs in makeshift submarine

MEXICO CITY (AFP) — The Mexican navy has intercepted a home-made submarine with a suspected drug shipment in Pacific waters, 15 kilometers (10 miles) off the coast of Oaxaca state, a navy spokesman said Wednesday.

"We are trying to confirm the quantity and the type" of the drug, although "we suspect it's cocaine," Captain Benjamin Mar told AFP.

He said the submarine was spotted from the air and its four crew members surrendered "without offering resistance."

"It's not a military submarine, it's 10 meters (33 feet) long and from what we know they're made in the Colombian jungle to carry drugs," Mar said.

The submarine was towed to a military base at Santa Cruz de Huatulco Bay, a local port official said.
