LONDON (AFP) — Singer Pete Doherty was jailed for 14 weeks by a British court Tuesday for breaching a probation order after a string of brushes with the law for drugs and driving offences.
Doherty, 29, best known for his bands Babyshambles and the Libertines as well as a past relationship with supermodel Kate Moss, said he had turned over a new leaf last year after being handed a suspended jail term.
But now he has been jailed by judge Davinder Lachar at West London Magistrates Court after breaching an order imposed last May when he admitted driving illegally in possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis.
The judge said he was being punished for drug use and missing appointments with probation officers.
Doherty's record label Parlophone said he had put off a solo show at the Royal Albert Hall in London later this month.
He is due to play at the Glastonbury music festival in June but it was not immediately clear whether he would be out of jail in time.
Parlophone added in a statement: "Today, Peter Doherty was sentenced to a total of 14 weeks in jail for being in breach of his probation order."
Doherty was previously jailed for breaking into fellow Libertine Carl Barat's flat and stealing items including a guitar and computer after being kicked out of the band for drug use.
The Libertines reunited briefly when Doherty emerged from jail in 2003 but split soon afterwards and Doherty went on to form Babyshambles. Barat is now frontman of Dirty Pretty Things.
