Schilling, Sosa head baseball free agent filings

NEW YORK, United States (AFP) — Curt Schilling barely had time to savor another World Series title with Boston when he decided to see test the free agent waters.

Schilling was one of 43 players who filed for free agency on Tuesday, as was former Most Valuable Player Sammy Sosa and Cleveland Indians left fielder Kenny Lofton.

Righthanded hurler Schilling was a key contributor of the 2007 Boston Red Sox who won their second World Series in four years with a four-game sweep of Colorado on Sunday.

Schilling, 39, was 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four postseason starts for Boston after posting a 9-8 record in 24 starts during the regular season.

Sosa rejuvenated his career by hitting .252 with 21 homers and 92 RBI for the Texas Rangers last season.

The 38-year-old Dominican had sat out the whole 2006 season after no team signed him. But he boasts 609 homers in 18 seasons with the Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles.

The 1998 National League MVP, Sosa is also a seven-time All-Star.

Lofton spent the 2007 season with the Rangers and the Indians, helping Cleveland reach the American League Championship Series by hitting .283 in 52 regular season games.

The 40-year-old outfielder hit .296 for the entire season with 86 runs scored and 21 stolen bases.

The free agent list also includes catchers Mike Piazza and Jason Kendall and pitchers David Wells and Jason Jennings.
