Keothavong makes history at US Open tennis
NEW YORK (AFP) — Anne Keothavong surprised 25th seeded Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to become the first British woman to reach the third round of the US Open since 1991.
The 24-year-old British number one from Hackney, east London, will now face Beijing Olympic gold medallist Elena Dementieva, ranked sixth in the world, for a place in the last 16.
Keothavong, who is ranked 87th in the world, reached the second round at Wimbledon in June where she lost to eventual champion Venus Williams.
