Williams drops WTA ranking despite Miami win
PARIS (AFP) — Former world No 1 Serena Williams may have successfully defended her title at the WTA Sony Ericsson Open at the weekend but she dropped one place in the WTA rankings released on Monday.
The rankings are calculated over the past 52 weeks, and it is players who improve their performances compared to last year who progress.
So Williams, who won in Miami in 2007, was overtaken by Elena Dementieva in the rankings. The Russian did not compete in Miami last year but reached the quarter-finals last week.
Dementieva moved up three places to eighth with Williams dropping to ninth.
