Bush praises 'really smart, capable' new French first lady

PARIS (AFP) — US President George W. Bush on Saturday praised new French first lady Carla Bruni, telling President Nicolas Sarkozy she was a "really smart, capable woman and I can see why you married her."

"And I can see why she married you too," Bush added at a joint news conference with Sarkozy.

Sarkozy and his wife, a former model-turned-singer whom he married in February, hosted a private dinner at the Elysee for Bush and his wife Laura Friday evening.

Bush remarked at the news conference that it was a "pleasure" to meet Bruni, whose latest foray in the media limelight has been over the much-awaited release next month of her third album titled "Comme Si De Rien N'Etait" (Simply).

Bruni, 40, married Sarkozy after a whirlwind three-month romance.
