BEIJING (AFP) — A giant panda evacuated after China's devastating earthquake in May gave birth to twins on Sunday, state media reported.
Guo Guo, who was relocated from the Wolong Panda Breeding Centre following the earthquake in southwest Sichuan province, gave birth at a panda base in the nearby city of Ya'an, Xinhua news agency reported.
The panda births were the first of the year, and come in the wake of the quake, which left nearly 88,000 people dead or missing and up to five million homeless.
The Wolong centre was severely damaged in the disaster, prompting the evacuation of several pandas to other breeding centres around China.
Guo Guo, 12, had been under round-the-clock observation since being transferred to the centre in Ya'an, the report said.
She has given birth three years running, it added.
Twelve pairs of panda twins were born in captivity in China last year, the most since an artificial breeding programme was launched more than 40 years ago.
