TAIPEI (AFP) — Taiwan's incoming president Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday promised tax reform for the island's high-tech industry to attract more investment into the sector.
"The finance ministry will swiftly set up a tax reform committee to review the current taxes, with the goal of imposing light taxes and simplifying tax procedure," Ma said.
"Hi-tech industry is crucial to Taiwan. Therefore we'll strive to leave room for their flexible operations," Ma told reporters after a closed-door meeting with the chiefs of leading Taiwanese electronics firms such as Acer.
Ma's incoming administration also plans to ease restrictions on investment in mainland China by Taiwanese firms.
Ma will take office on May 20. His Beijing-friendly Kuomintang upset Frank Hsieh of the ruling party, which favours independence from rival China, in a landslide presidential victory in March.
