Spain buys Lorca manuscript for 30,757 euros: ministry

MADRID (AFP) — Spain's culture ministry said Wednesday it had purchased one of celebrated poet Federico Garcia Lorca's manuscripts for more than 30,000 euros through a Sotheby's auction in London.

The ministry purchased it for 30,757 euros (45,438 dollars) in consultation with the Federico Garcia Lorca Foundation, a ministry spokesman said.

The identity of the buyer, who participated in the auction by telephone on Tuesday evening, had not been revealed by Sotheby's.

The manuscript contains 42 lines from the poem "Crucifixion", written by the Spanish poet and dramatist in October 1929 during a nine-month stay in New York.

Sotheby's had estimated the price of the manuscript at between 27,000 and 41,000 euros.

Lorca, also the author of "Blood Wedding" and "The House of Bernarda Alba", was shot during the Spanish civil war in 1936. He is one of Spain's most famous literary figures.
