Man in London court charged with murder of French students

LONDON (AFP) — A 33-year-old man appeared in a London court on Thursday charged with the brutal murders of two French students who were found in a flat which had been set alight.

Nigel Farmer, who is unemployed and of no fixed address, appeared at Greenwich Magistrates' Court in south-east London following the deaths on June 29 of Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo, both 23.

He is also accused of arson and attempting to pervert the course of justice and was remanded in custody until October 16, when he will appear at London's Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey.

Bonomo was stabbed nearly 200 times -- with up to 80 of the wounds inflicted after he died -- while Ferez suffered nearly 50 knife wounds.

The students were on an exchange programme at London's prestigious Imperial College.
