Israeli fire kills Gaza farmer

GAZA CITY (AFP) — A Palestinian farmer was killed by an Israeli artillery round on Saturday as he worked in his fields near the border between the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and Israel, Palestinian medics said.

The strike, near the northern town of Jabaliya, killed Rafaat Mansur, a 35-year-old farmer, and wounded another person, they said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said Palestinians had opened fire and launched an anti-tank missile at an Israeli border patrol along the northern perimeter fencem, but that the patrol did not return fire.

Since Israel and the Palestinians formally relaunched peace talks in November at least 367 people have been killed, most of them Gaza militants, according to an AFP count.

At least 6,330 people have been killed overall, the vast majority of them Palestinians, since the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising in 2000.
