PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AFP) — Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was set to guide his club in a Major League Baseball playoff game here Friday despite the death of his mother in the morning.
June Manuel, who suffered a heart attack Tuesday, died at age 87, a team spokesman said.
Manuel was on the field when the Phillies took pre-game batting practice ahead of game two of the best-of-seven National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Although Manuel did not speak with reporters before the game as usual, he was planning to work the game. The Phillies rallied to capture the opening game of the series on Thursday.
The teams travel to Los Angeles for game three on Sunday.
Charlie Manuel was the third-oldest of 11 siblings. His father Charles Snr died at age 43 when Charlie will still a teen.
