DALLAS, Texas (AFP) — The Dallas Cowboys added yet another star to their roster on Tuesday when they acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from Detroit in exchange for three draft selections.
Williams, a 2006 Pro Bowler, has 29 touchdown receptions in 60 career games. In order to get him, the Dallas gave the struggling Lions their first-, third- and sixth-round picks in the 2009 National Football League draft.
Dallas also acquired Detroit's seventh-round selection in 2009 as part of the deal, which was finished just before Tuesday's trade deadline.
Williams joins a high-powered Cowboys offense that already features talented and talkative Terrell Owens.
The combination of Williams, Owens and Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten gives Dallas perhaps the most potent aerial attack in the NFL.
Williams also will bolster Dallas' injury-depleted receiving corps that already is without wideout Sam Hurd, who will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.
Williams won't immediately team up with quarterback Tony Romo, who could miss up to four weeks with a broken pinkie finger on his throwing hand.
Williams, 26, hauled in 17 receptions for 232 yards and one touchdown in five games this season for the Lions.
He is now headed from one of the league's worst teams to one of its best. The Cowboys own a 4-2 record and have averaged 29.2 points per game, third best in the NFL.
Williams has spent his entire career with the Lions, recording 262 catches for 3,884 yards.
