Man in court over bakery murder

LONDON (AFP) — A man appeared in court Thursday charged with the murder of a 16-year-old teenager in a London bakery.

Jake Fahri, 19, is accused of fatally attacking Jimmy Mizen in an apparently random act of violence at a bakery in Lee, south-east London on Saturday morning.

Mizen died of a fatal neck injury from a shard of glass after refusing to take part in a fight.

Fahri was remanded in custody after appearing at Sutton Magistrates' Court. He will appear before the Old Bailey on August 21.

Mizen, a churchgoing boy described by his parents as a "dear, sweet young man", had celebrated his 16th birthday the day before his death.

"On the night of his birthday he was going out with his friends and we cuddled him. That is just a great, great memory," said father Barry Mizen.

Mizen was due to start an apprenticeship in Southwark Council's housing department.

He is survived by his six brothers and two sisters.

His death brings the number of teenagers murdered in London so far this year to 13.
