Cheney leaves Israel after Mideast peace push trip

TEL AVIV (AFP) — US Vice President Dick Cheney left Israel on Monday after a visit to the Jewish state and Palestinian territories aimed at pushing the renewed but faltering Middle East peace talks.

Before leaving, he accused Iran and Syria of trying to undermined the peace negotiations that the two sides revived under US stewardship four months ago, but on which they have since made little progress.

Iran and Syria "are doing everything they can to torpedo the peace process," Cheney told reporters in Jerusalem at the tail end of a trip that began on Saturday night.

The vice president headed to Turkey, the last leg of a regional tour that has also taken him to Iraq, Afghanistan, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.

In Turkey, Cheney was to meet with President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other senior officials.
