Mayweather looks at de la Hoya September rematch

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Unbeaten welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya have nearly settled on terms for a September rematch of their showdown from last May that set revenue records.

Richard Schaefer, chief executive of De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, said that both fighters have agreed to the idea with only final financial terms to be worked out.

"We are still discussing things but we have almost finalized it," Schaefer told ESPN.

The first Mayweather-De la Hoya bout grossed 120 million dollars to become the richest fight in boxing history, surpassing the 112 million dollars from a 2002 showdown between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

Mayweather, 39-0 with 25 knockouts, won a 12-round split decision over de la Hoya, 38-5 with 30 knockouts, last May in Las Vegas and kept his World Boxing Council crown with a 10th-round stoppage of England's Ricky Hatton last month.

The fight will likely be September 13 or 20 in Las Vegas or Los Angeles and possibly at a catch weight between the welterweight and higher junior middleweight level.

Possible venues include Dodger Stadium and the 27,000-seat home of Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy as de la Hoya has said he wants an outdoor bout at some point before retirement.
