MOSCOW (AFP) — A bomb exploded Wednesday near a Russian peacekeeping post on the border between Georgia and its rebel Abkhazia region, news agencies reported.
No one was injured by the blast, caused by an explosive device thrown from a car window, but Russian peacekeepers accused Georgia of "provocative actions" for failing to prevent the attack, Interfax news agency reported.
"No measures to detain the vehicle were undertaken, so it is possible to say that the Georgian special services are carrying out provocative actions aimed at destabilising conditions in the region," a spokesman for the peacekeepers, Alexander Novitsky, was quoted as saying.
Abkhazia closed its border with the rest of Georgia this week after 10 people were injured in a string of explosions in the region that the rebels blamed on Tbilisi.
A narrow strip of land on the Black Sea, Abkhazia has increasingly become a centre of tensions between pro-Western Georgia and its giant neighbour Russia, which Tbilisi accuses of propping up the rebels.
Abkhazia has had de facto independence since breaking away from Georgia in the early 1990s in a war that killed several thousand people and forced hundreds of thousands of Georgians to flee their homes.
