MLB to debut instant replay starting Thursday

NEW YORK (AFP) — American baseball is to debut video replay to assist umpires on home run calls, commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday.

Selig said approval of instant replay would allow Major League Baseball umpires to check video on home run calls beginning Thursday.

The three series where instant review will first be employed will feature the Minnesota Twins at the Oakland Athletics, the Texas Rangers at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Philadelphia Phillies at the Chicago Cubs.

For other games, replay will be available to umpires starting Friday.

It will be a slow introduction to replay. Video will be used only to determine whether fly balls went over the fence or if potential home runs were fair or foul.
