HANOI (AFP) — Two Vietnamese were killed when a bomb left over from the war exploded while they were digging up a garden in a construction site, state media reported Tuesday.
The blast happened on Saturday as Nguyen Van Thanh, 30, and Vu Van Dung, 20, were working in the 500-square-metre (5,380-square-foot) garden in southern Binh Duong province, the Vietnam News Agency said.
"The two male victims were torn into pieces," local resident Nguyen Thi Hoai told AFP, adding that the house under construction was totally demolished by the blast.
Military officials confirmed the accident occurred when a bomb from the Vietnam war exploded. A similar blast more than one month ago killed two men in a nearby area, Vietnam News Agency said.
According to the Public Security Ministry, explosives left over from the Vietnam War, which ended in 1975, have killed more than 38,000 Vietnamese people and injured 100,000 others.
