SANTA CLARA, California (AFP) — Peter Vanderkaay has broken the American record in the men's 400m free, clocking 3:43.82 to win his second title of the Santa Clara International grand prix swimming meeting.
Vanderkaay late on Saturday broke the American mark set by Klete Keller in August 2004, with teammate Erik Vendt finishing second in 3:46.56 and Michael Klueh third.
US superstar Michael Phelps, Australian Bronte Barratt and American Natalie Coughlin all added to their gold medal hauls.
Phelps clocked a meet record of 51.61sec to win the 100m butterfly, ahead of fellow American Davis Tarwater (53.04), with Australian Garth Kates third in 53.43. Phelps had won the 400m medley on Friday
Barratt won the women's 200m free in a meet record of 1:57.18, and she was also part of Australia's winning 4x200m free relay team - joining Kylie Palmer, Lorren Sellwood and Ellen Fullerton to crush the meet record with a time of 8:05.08.
Japan's Maki Mita, Haruka Ueda, Emi Takanabe and Misaki Yamaguchi were also under the former record with a time of 8:06.61.
On Friday, Barratt won gold in the 400m free and was part of Australia's winning 4x100m free relay team.
American Natalie Coughlin also added to her gold medal haul with a win in the women's 100m back.
Coughlin won in 59.44, with Margaret Hoelzer second in 1:01.13.
South African Roland Schoeman won the men's 50m free in 22.29. Matt Grevers was second in 22.58 and South African Ryk Neethling third in 22.68.
In one of the closest races of the night, Aaron Peirsol and Phelps dueled in the men's 200m backstroke.
Peirsol led throughout and held off Phelps on the final lap to win in 1:55.81.
Phelps was second in 1:55.84 and Chris DeJong was third in 1:57.61. Peirsol's and Phelps' swims were the two fastest in the world this year.
In the women's 400m individual medley, 15-year-old Elizabeth Beisel rode a strong backstroke leg to victory in 4:36.75.
The meet concludes on Sunday
