Doctor Who producer quits

LONDON (AFP) — Russell T Davies will step down as executive producer of the popular television series Doctor Who, the BBC said Wednesday.

Davies will be replaced by writer Steven Moffat as lead writer and executive producer of the fifth series.

BBC Fiction controller Jane Tranter praised Davies for his role in reviving the sci-fi show which was revamped in 2005.

"As lead writer and executive producer, he has overseen the creative direction and detail of the 21st century relaunch of Doctor Who and we are delighted to have his continued presence on the specials over the next 18 months," she said.

Davies will supervise four special episodes which will be broadcast in 2009.

Doctor Who was originally broadcast from 1963 - 1989.
