Consumers burned by Hamilton Beach toaster recall

OTTAWA (AFP) — Leading kitchen appliances maker Hamilton Beach Brands announced Thursday a recall of 40,000 toasters in Canada because of a possible fire hazard.

The company urged its customers to "immediately stop using the toaster," it said in a statement referring to specific models purchased in Canada between August 2007 and January 2008.

"The toaster may remain energized after popping up and could possibly ignite any flammable materials left on top of the unit, posing a fire hazard," the company said.

However, there have been no reports of fire, flame or personal injuries, it added.

Consumers should contact the company, not the store where they purchased their toaster, to exchange it for a new toaster, Hamilton Beach said.
