LONDON (AFP) — The mother of a seven-year-old girl who died after allegedly being starved at her home appeared before a court Wednesday to face neglect charges.
Angela Gordon, 33, and her partner, Junaid Abuhamza, 29, both appeared before Birmingham Crown Court via video link from custody where they are being held pending trial.
They are both accused of "causing or allowing" the death of Khyra Ishaq, who died after being taken to hospital from her home in the Handsworth area of Birmingham on May 17.
Police have refused to confirm a television report that Khyra died from starvation.
The case has put child protection issues back in the spotlight after a string of cases in which young children, some on local authority child protection lists, have been ill-treated, abused or even killed by their parents or carers.
