Philippine real estate giant renames company after Trump threat

MANILA (AFP) — Philippine real estate giant Megaworld Corp changed the name of a project -- originally called "The Trumps" -- after US tycoon and television personality Donald Trump threatened to take them to court, a local business daily said Friday.

Megaworld's 5.5 billion peso (133.4 million dollar) "The Trumps" condominium project will now be called "One Central" the BusinessWorld newspaper said.

Trump threatened to take legal action against Megaworld for its "outrageous attempt to mislead buyers into thinking that my name and company is affiliated with Megaworld's project."

However Megaworld denied it was backing down to Trump's threats, saying "we are by no means relinquishing our right to use The Trumps name in any of our real estate projects in the Philippines," the newspaper reported.

Megaworld said the name was changed to reflect the project's central location in the heart of the financial district.

"We'd like to thank Mr. Trump for generating a lot of interest in One Central in the last few days. We are now seriously considering launching it ahead of schedule," the company added.
