Israel to release more than 150 prisoners: Palestinians

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) — Israel will release more than 150 Palestinian prisoners before the end of August to bolster US-backed peace talks, senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat told AFP on Wednesday.

The announcement was made following a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in Jerusalem, their first since Olmert announced he would resign later this year.

"It was a successful meeting. We have an agreement to release more than 150 prisoners in Israeli jails before the end of this month," Erakat told AFP.

Israeli officials confirmed they would be releasing prisoners before the end of August but declined to provide numbers.
