BUENOS AIRES (AFP) — Argentine President Cristina Kirchner on Saturday ordered civil and criminal investigations into massive brush fires whose smoke has caused misery in Buenos Aires.
Kirchner flew by helicopter over an area where fires raged northwest of the capital, which have been blamed on soybean and cattle farmers clearing pasture.
"I have given instructions to begin criminal and civil justice actions," she told reporters after alighting the aircraft.
"The actions must also include indemnizations against landowners, who are responsible for the damages," Kirchner said.
"The collective rights of Argentines to live in a healthier, more decent environment ... have been affected."
Two people accused of igniting the fires have been arrested, said Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo. Authorities were looking for the owner of 2,000 (5,000 acres) of the 70,000 hectares (170,000 acres) that have burned.
The fires have produced huge plumes of smoke that have caused severe road and air traffic disruptions in Buenos Aires and even reached Uruguay's capital Montevideo, 223 kilometers (138 miles) east across the immense La Plata river.
