ANGOULEME, France (AFP) — One of the most prestigious prizes in comic-book publishing, the Grand Prix 2008 at Angouleme, was shared Sunday for the first time in its 35-year history, organisers said.
Philippe Dupuy and Iraqi-born Charles Berberian shared the achievement award, made by a jury of former winners at the western French town's festival, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors.
Australian author Shaun Tan won album of the year for 'La ou vont nos peres' ('The Arrival').
"It was impossible to separate (Dupuy and Berberian)," said the festival's artistic director, Benoit Mouchard. "They had already won as a duo (in the past)."
The pair first appeared in the 'Fluide Glacial' comics magazine in 1984. Their renown 'Monsieur Jean' series of the 1990s made comic-book stars of them.
Angouleme is the biggest comic-book festival in the world, outside Japan.
