KINSHASA (AFP) — Mai-Mai rebels have attacked a military base in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing a soldier and wounding two others, the military commander in Nord-Kivu province said Monday.
Four rebels were killed during the attack, which happened overnight Saturday near Nyabiondo in Masisi, around 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of the provincial capital Goma, General Vainquer Mayala Kyama told AFP.
"Our forces sustained one dead and two slightly wounded, the attackers four dead and two captured," Kyama said, adding that the rebels' target had been cash used to pay the soldiers.
Violence has continued despite a peace agreement signed in Goma in January by around 20 armed groups operating in the remote region.
The Masisi region is home to several militant groups who have taken advantage of the difficult terrain to harass the civilian population and government forces.
