UEFA Cup bet with Ribery costs van Bommel 100 euros

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) — An on-field bet with Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery cost Dutch team-mate Mark van Bommel 100 euros (154 US dollars) when the French star hit the back of the net in a UEFA Cup clash.

Bayern won the first-leg of their UEFA Cup last-16 round clash against Anderlecht 5-0 in Belgium on Thursday night, but both van Bommel and Ribery eyed-up an 86th minute penalty - and the Frenchman insisted he would take it.

A brief discussion took place leading to van Bommel saying he would pay Ribery 100 euros if he netted the direct free-kick - which the 2006 World Cup star promptly did.

"I thought it was a good way to make some quick money, but I was wrong," van Bommel told German sports agency SID with a smile.

The second-leg of the UEFA Cup clash will take place at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
