US writer Norman Mailer hospitalized
NEW YORK (AFP) — Prominent US writer and journalist Norman Mailer has reportedly been hospitalized here with acute respiratory problems.
"He's not in very good shape. It's breaking my heart," one of his former wives, Carol Mailer, was quoted in the New York Post as saying.
The writer was reported to be at an intensive care unit at Mount Sinai Hospital.
According to Carol Mailer, the writer was first hospitalized in Boston some time ago with an asthma attack, but insisted on being released because he wanted to attend his daughter's wedding in New York on September 8.
Mailer is a recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes and a National Book Award.
He is also one of the founder of the Village Voice considered a must-read by New York cultural elites.
