RPG kills US soldier in Iraq
BAGHDAD (AFP) — An American soldier died in a rocket-propelled grenade attack while on patrol in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Wednesday, the US military announced.
Three soldiers were also wounded in the attack, a military statement said without giving further details.
US and Iraqi forces are engaged in an extensive operation against Al-Qaeda fighters in Mosul, considered by American commanders to be the last urban bastion in Iraq of the jihadist network.
The military earlier Wednesday announced that three soldiers were killed the previous day when their patrol was hit by a roadside bomb in northwestern Baghdad.
The latest death brings to 3,967 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since the 2003 invasion, according to an AFP tally based on independent website www.icasualties.org.
Roadside bombs, especially highly lethal explosively formed penetrators (EFPs) which shoot out a slug of molten metal that can cut through armoured vehicles, are the biggest cause of US casualties in Iraq.
