DALLAS, Texas (AFP) — Cornerback Terence Newman and running back Marion Barber re-signed long-term contracts on Tuesday with the Dallas Cowboys, giving the National Football League squad security in both positions.
Newman agreed a six-year contract extension worth a reported 50.2 million dollars, 22.5 million of it guaranteed, while Barber's deal was for seven years and a reported 45 million dollars, 16 million dollars guaranteed.
Newman will be counted upon as a defensive backfield leader alongside All-Pro safety Ken Hamlin and rookie cornerback Mike Jenkins and his contract rivals similar off-season deals by others at his position.
De Angelo Hall signed with Oakland for 67 million dollars over seven years while Marcus Trufant agreed to a six-year pact for 50.2 million dollars and Asante Samuel a six-year deal for 57 million dollars with Philadelphia.
Another possible cornerback in the Dallas lineup is Adam "Pacman" Jones, obtained last month from Tennessee but still under a league-imposed suspension.
Newman, 29, made 50 tackles and four interceptions last season while Barber, 24, ran for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns, both team bests.
