MADRID (AFP) — Spain's Rafael Nadal, the world number two and Masters Cup semi-finalist in Shanghai, has conceded he has difficulty running since a foot injury in 2005.
"I didn't say so before because it seemed like an excuse. I don't like to talk about injuries. I am preparing physically every day but I cannot run," he told Spain's El Pais daily published Tuesday.
"Now, during the pre-season, I am going to try," he said. "Since my foot problem in 2005, I am very careful. I feel it. I must adapt my physical work accordingly."
Nadal said he is swimming, rowing and cycling to try and keep fit.
"But I know from experience that it's not the same thing as running. It does not give the same confidence. It's hard."
The winner of three French Open titles was beaten 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday by Switzerland's Roger Federer in the semi-final in Shanghai.
