Paloma strengthens to Category Three hurricane

MIAMI (AFP) — Hurricane Paloma, currently lashing the Cayman islands in the Caribbean on its way towards Cuba, has strengthened to a "dangerous" Category Three storm with maximum sustained winds near 185 kilometers (115 miles) per hour, the National Hurricane Center here said.

At 6:50 pm (2350 GMT) Paloma's center was located 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the eastern edge of Grand Cayman and about 440 kilometers (275 miles) southwest of Camaguey, Cuba, the NHC said in a bulletin.

"Paloma is now a Category Three hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Additional strengthening is possible through Saturday morning," it said.
