LOS ANGELES (AFP) — The Stone Age epic "10,000 BC," about a young mammoth hunter's quest to preserve his tribe's way of life, was the big kill at the North American box office this weekend, industry figures showed Monday.

The movie, laden with special effects that brought woolly mammoths and fierce birds to life on the screen, earned 35.9 million dollars in its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, industry-tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

The coming-of-age comedy "College Road Trip," featuring a father's antics as his daughter prepares to go off to university, took second place in its debut weekend with 13.6 million dollars.

The thriller "Vantage Point," which reconstructs the assassination of a US president through the eyes of eight witnesses, dropped to third place in its third week with 7.4 million in earnings.

The film stars William Hurt as the president and Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox as secret service agents sent to protect him.

Debuting in fourth place with 5.7 million dollars was "The Bank Job," based on the true story of a 1971 London bank heist in which neither the robbers nor their millions in stolen cash were ever found.

The comedy "Semi-Pro," starring comedian Will Ferrell as the flamboyant owner of a hapless basketball team, bounced to fifth place with 5.7 million between Friday and Sunday.

The children's fantasy "The Spiderwick Chronicles" took in 4.7 million, falling to sixth place.

In seventh was the British historical drama "The Other Boleyn Girl," starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, with four million dollars. The film portrays a vicious rivalry between sisters Anne and Mary Boleyn as they compete for the affections of King Henry.

Teen musical "Step up 2 the Streets" fell to ninth place, earning 3.1 million, followed by the treasure hunter comedy "Fool's Gold," starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, at 2.8 million.
