HELSINKI (AFP) — Finnish ice hockey players competing in the NHL have been implicated in a network of trafficking amphetamines recently uncovered in Finland and Estonia, the sports newspaper Urheilulehti claimed Thursday.
Police have refused to comment on the affair. "We have decided not to make public the results of the preliminary inquiry or the names of the people being questioned," the head of the enquiry Ari Karvonen said.
The head of the Finnish Association of Ice Hockey Players however dismissed the newspaper claims.
"We would have had the information if there had been the slightest suspicion against Finnish players. I do not believe these accusations," said Jarmo Saarela.
The newspaper claims that some 15 people have been arrested on suspicion of bringing in 200kg of amphetamines worth up to 4 million euros into Finland from Estonia.
