White Sox sign Dominican pitcher, Cuban outfielder

CHICAGO (AFP) — Dominican right-handed pitcher Octavio Dotel and Cuban outfielder Alexei Ramirez each signed multi-year deals with the Chicago White Sox, the Major League Baseball club announced Tuesday.

Dotel, who played last year with Atlanta and Kansas City, accepted a two-year contract for 11 million dollars, including five million this year, while Ramirez will receive a four-year deal worth 4.75 million dollars.

Dotel, 34, went 2-1 with a 4.11 earned-run average and 15 saves in a total of 33 appearances. He will help strengthen the White Sox bullpen, having gone 39-32 with 82 saves in 428 appearances with six major league clubs.

Ramirez, 26, played for Cuba's runner-up team in the inuagural World Baseball Classic. He batted .375 and drove in a pair of runs in the 2006 global event. Cuba was beaten by Japan in the championship game.

Ramirez played the past seven years for Pinar del Rio of the Cuban league, where he batted a career .334.
