France's Sonia Rykiel fetes 40 years in fashion

PARIS (AFP) — Sonia Rykiel on Wednesday celebrated 40 years as France's fashion queen with a star-studded bash outside Paris for more than 500 A-list guests.

Fellow couturiers Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier, Olivier Theyskens and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac joined former prime minister Lionel Jospin and actress Elodie Bouchez for the party in the Saint-Cloud park.

The fashion house's ready-to-wear collection for spring-summer 2009, designed by Gabrielle Greiss, paid tribute to classic Rykiel looks from the past, featuring black trouser suits, glittering berets and lots of knitwear.

"You have inspired the world of fashion for 40 years," her daughter Nathalie Rykiel said, also announcing a surprise -- 30 designers had created a special anniversary tribute show.

Guests cheered the creations from the top names in the industry such as Lacroix, Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Yohji Yamamoto, Alber Elbaz, Valentino, Missoni, Vivienne Westwood, Roberto Cavalli.
