Obama to address convention Monday by satellite

CHICAGO (AFP) — Barack Obama will address the Denver Democratic convention live via satellite later Monday after a speech by his wife Michelle, according to his White House campaign.

The Illinois senator will make the surprise virtual appearance from Kansas City, Missouri after a campaign stop in Iowa, and will also watch his wife's speech in Kansas City, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said without elaborating.

Barack Obama is not due in Denver until Wednesday, when he and his new vice presidential running mate Joseph Biden will be formally adopted as the Democratic ticket for November's election.

Obama, 47, will then give his acceptance speech on Thursday to upwards of 75,000 supporters in a Denver stadium, away from the main convention venue.

Obama, who will become the first black presidential nominee, says he will try to persuade voters he is just a normal middle-class American despite his exotic upbringing and Republican claims he is an elitist.

Michelle Obama's speech will play a major role in that humbler portrayal. Her husband told reporters Sunday that he had seen a video preview and she was "extraordinary."
