SEOUL (AFP) — South Korea is considering relocating 'Enemy Cemetery', where the bodies of North Korean and Chinese troops from the 1950-1953 Korean war are buried, a report said on Sunday.
About 550 North Korean and Chinese troops who died during the 1950-53 war are buried at the site, which has room for around 700 graves.
But the cemetery in Paju, just south of the inter-Korean border, is expected to become overcrowded after the discovery of more remains this year, Yonhap news agency said.
A defence ministry team has discovered the remains of 116 North Korean and Chinese soldiers and is expected to find the remains of 150 more by the end of this year, it said.
South Korea has demanded that Pyongyang and Beijing take back the remains of their troops, but the communist nations refuse to do so, Yonhap said.
The North refuses as it fears the move could prompt South Korea to demand the return of its prisoners war, according to the agency.
Seoul believes about 500 South Korean prisoners of war are still alive in North Korea. Pyongyang denies holding any South Koreans against their will, though some have managed to escape and come South.
